The Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) serves as a means to evaluate the environmental impact of yachts and uncovering steps for improvement. Bram Jongepier, senior specialist at Studio De Voogt, rebuffs greenwashing in the industry and champions YETI as a legitimate benchmark.

The Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) has emerged as an instrument to evaluate and enhance the ecological components of yachts. Conceived in 2019, YETI provides guidance to those seeking new construction as well as refitting existing yachts with an expanded focus on sustainability. Initiated by Studio De Voogt's Bram Jongepier, YETI was a response to the increasing prevalence of baseless claims about yacht 'greenness'. Collaborating with Delft University, De Voogt launched a project exploring alternative energy resources and means to measure sustainable impact. This collaboration sparked the creation of YETI, oriented not just towards Feadship but the entire yacht industry. Inviting collaboration from various industry players, Feadship initiated a Joint Industry Project (JIP) endorsed by the Water Revolution Foundation. Jongepier emphasizes the need for a holistic understanding of environmental impact extending beyond global warming measures – YETI advocates for changes that instigate overall ecological betterment, like selective catalytic reduction, denoted through Ecopoints. The YETI calculator aids those focussed on CO2 impact while an Ecopoint signifies the complete environmental burden of a product across its lifecycle, incorporating 18 different impact measures across three categories: human health, ecosystem quality, and resources.
