Latest fires at marina in Lave’s port, Marseille, cause destruction of three yachts, pointing once again, glaringly, the wide issues in fire prevention and safety across the marine market.
On 9th January, a yachting community in Lave's port, Marseille experienced a devastating blaze that destroyed three luxury yachts. The fire started on one yacht and quickly spread to the two others nearby. Resultant were the tremendous efforts of 63 firefighters, 19 vehicles, three firefighting boats, and aerial reconnaissance drones involved in the containment of the flame as well as current speculation on the causal source which remains unknown. Often, fingers are pointed towards shoddily sourced lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in toys and tenders. The recurrence of these incidents alludes to the urgent requirement of understanding, identifying, and subsequently addressing the root causes. Sharing data, learning from such incidents and implementing preemptive measures is imminent. As investigations into the Marseille fire progress, the industry is faced with addressing the challenge of lithium-ion battery-induced blaze risk, head-on. Questions continue to linger about current safety practices and their adequacy until decisive action is taken.
